چکیده

Call a set of 2n + k elements Kneser-colored when its n-subsets are put into classes such that disjoint n-subsets are in different classes. Kneser showed that k + 2 classes are sufficient to Kneser-color the n-subsets of a 2n + k element set. There are several proofs that this same number is necessary which rely on fixed-point theorems related to the Lusternik-SchnirelmannBorsuk (LSB) theorem. By employing generalizations of these theorems we expand the proofs mentioned to obtain proofs of an original result we call the Subcoloring theorem. The Subcoloring theorem asserts the existence of a partition of a Kneser-colored set that halves its classes in a special way. We demonstrate both a topological proof and a combinatorial proof of this main result. We present an original corollary that extends the Subcoloring theorem by providing bounds on the size of the pieces of the asserted partition. Throughout, we formulate our results both in combinatorial and graph theoretic terminology.

A Borsuk-Ulam Equivalent that Directly Implies Sperner's Lemma

We show that Fan’s 1952 lemma on labelled triangulations of the n-sphere with n + 1 labels is equivalent to the Borsuk–Ulam theorem. Moreover, unlike other Borsuk–Ulam equivalents, we show that this lemma directly implies Sperner’s Lemma, so this proof may be regarded as a combinatorial version of the fact that the Borsuk–Ulam theorem implies the Brouwer fixed-point theorem, or that the Lustern...

ON THE GROUP AutΩ(X)

Felix and Murillo [5] introduced the group AutΩ(X) of self-maps f of X, which satisfy Ωf = 1ΩX , and proved that the group is nilpotent with the order of nilpotency bounded by the Lusternik-Schnirelmann category of X. In this paper we construct a spectral sequence converging to the group AutΩ(X) and derive several interesting consequences.

The Lusternik-schnirelmann Category of a Lie Groupoid

We propose a new homotopy invariant for Lie groupoids which generalizes the classical Lusternik-Schnirelmann category for topological spaces. We use a bicategorical approach to develop a notion of contraction in this context. We propose a notion of homotopy between generalized maps given by the 2-arrows in a certain bicategory of fractions. This notion is invariant under Morita equivalence. Thu...

Equivariant Topology of Configuration Spaces

We study the Fadell–Husseini index of the configuration space F (R, n) with respect to different subgroups of the symmetric group Sn. For p prime and k ≥ 1, we completely determine IndexZ/p(F (R, p);Fp) and partially describe Index(Z/p)k (F (R, p);Fp). In this process we obtain results of independent interest, including: (1) an extended equivariant Goresky–MacPherson formula, (2) a complete des...

Unimodal Category and Topological Statistics

We consider the problem of decomposing a compactly supported distribution f : Rn → [0,∞) into a minimal number of unimodal components by means of some convex operation (e.g., sum or sup). The resulting “unimodal category” of f is a topological invariant of the distribution which shares a number of properties with the Lusternik-Schnirelmann category of a topological space. This work introduces t...
